Day 2: Mount Nebo / Madaba / Machaerus / Dead Sea
After breakfast, we head to Mount Nebo, which is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death. We visit the memorial of Moses, and proceed to visit Madaba.
Madaba was once a Moabite border city, mentioned in the Bible in Numbers 21:30 and Joshua 13:9. Control over the city changed back and forth between Israel and Moab.
We visit the Saint George church, home of one of the most detailed Mosaic maps in the region dating from the 6th century. The mosaic contains the earliest still existing representation of Byzantine Jerusalem, labelled the “Holy City”. It also provides important details about its 6th-century landmarks, with the cardo, or central colonnaded street, and the church of the Holy Sepulcher clearly visible. This map is one key in developing scholarly knowledge about the physical layout of Jerusalem after its destruction and rebuilding in 70 AD.
After lunch, we proceed to visit Mukawer, or Machaerus the hilltop stronghold of Herod the Great. Upon Herod’s death, his son Herod Antipas inherited the fortress and it is from here that he ordered John the Baptist to be beheaded after Salome’s fateful dance of the seven veils.
We proceed later to the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea for relaxation and overnight stay.
Day: 3 Dead Sea / Valley of Moses (Petra) / Moses Spring / Amman
After breakfast, we head to Petra via desert highway for a full day visit. The Nabateans carved this city in stone with simple tools more than 1500 years ago, and nothing will prepare you for the beauty and the sheer size of Al Khazna! This world wonder will leave you in awe.
The name Valley of Moses (Wadi Mousa) comes from the story that Moses passed through the valley and struck water from the rock for his followers at the site of Ain Musa (“Moses Spring” OR “Moses Well”) The Nabateans built channels that carried water from this spring to the city of Petra.
We visit the springs, and then head back to Amman for overnight stay.
